Our first blog post will be published on September 14, 2026. It is entitled "Washington's Will" and seeks to explore the contents of our Founding Father's holographic last will and testament, which is still housed at the Fairfax County Circuit Court.

The first president wrote his own estate plan. Washington made this clear in its penultimate passage, stating that "no professional character has been consulted, or has had any Agency in the draught. . . ." His work over the course of nearly 30 pages and roughly 8,000 words was impressive.

 

Yet, Washington failed to anticipate numerous legal issues that would arise after his death. 

Part one of this three-part blog series will consider the contents of Washington's will and discuss how an estate planning lawyer could have helped our first president better achieve his desired goals.
